This place is also known as the Leper Island as that is where lepers from Crete and the rest of Greece were quarantined until 1957.
The island forms a natural defence “mechanism” for Elounda harbour, and in 1579 the Venetians built a mighty fortress here on the ruins of an ancient acropolis. They kept control of the island even after the rest of Crete fell to the Ottomans in 1669 and it remained under their control until its capitulation in 1715.
It is not so difficult to get to this place. You can get by bus, where the coach first will drop you at the harbour of Agios Nikolaos and you will have free time for shopping and sightseeing and after follows boarding on the boat and departing to Spinalonga.
After the guided tour on the island, the boat takes you to the Kolokitha Bay, a beautiful beach, where you can swim in crystal clear water, lay on the sand . Trip to Spinalonga is definitely one of the best opportunities to spend time with pleasure.
